Registration Deadline Extended!

Registration for the 2008 Medina Girls Softball Association summer season has been extended! Register before April 1 with NO LATE FEE.

Registration forms for the 2008 season are available here. You can print and mail them in to our Post Office Box listed on the form. If you are outside the City of Medina, you must purchase a Sports Activity Permit (SAP) from the City, available at the Medina Community Recreation Center, and provide the SAP number on your registration form.

2008 Player Registration

If you are outside the City of Medina, you must purchase a Sports Activity Permit (SAP) from the City, available at the Medina Community Recreation Center, and provide the SAP number on your registration form. Deadline for registrations is March 15, 2008.

We will also be available in person at the All Sports Registration event, January 12. 2008 from 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM at the Medina Community Recreation Center. Sports Activity Permits will be available for purchase. Please park in Lot F and use the F3 door to enter the MCRC Field House.

In addition, we will also have live registration in conjunction with Medina Youth Baseball at Rustic Hills Country Club on February 2 and 16 from 10:00 Am until 1:00 PM.

Save Olympic Softball

The 117th International Olypmic Committee voted to exclude softball from the World Olympic Program in 2012. According to the Olympic Charter, rule 46, softball will remain on a list, and may be eligible for inclusion in the program for the 2016 World Olympic Games.

Softball will still be a part of the Olympic Games in the 2008 World Program. USA, ISA, and ASA softball affiliates along with the US Olympic Committee are being led by the ISF to show the IOC that there is world interest for this sport.

The birth of softball in the 1996 World Olympic Games was a great accomplishment toward world wide acceptance of Women's team sports. It would be a short-lived life if eliminated after the 2008 World Olympic Games, and it would be a tragic event for so many young dreams of participation to be shattered.

NEW STARTING TIME FOR PITCHING/CATCHING CLINIC

The starting time for the Monday night pitching/catching clinics has been pushed back to 7 p.m. until further notice. Also, due to the number of players attending, we must limit the clinics to pitchers and catchers only. Thanks!

WINTER INDOOR PITCHING/CATCHING

A winter open gym for pitchers and catchers has been scheduled for Monday evenings from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM beginning November 26, 2007. These sessions will be held at the Medina High School gym. All softball players are welcome to attend. Al DiTomasso, Head Coach of the Medina High School Varsity Fastpitch Team, as well as many of the travel team coaches, will be present to provide assistance/instruction. Session dates are as follows:

Please pass the word on to all those players interested and remind all pitchers to bring a catcher to each session. Indoor balls (softies) will be available if needed.

Travel Team Tryouts – 2008 Season

The Medina Girls Softball Association’s Travel program attempts to identify the most talented fastpitch softball players within the organization and provide them with the opportunity to play softball in a more competitive environment. Our Travel Teams participate in the Lorain-Medina league within the Ohio Girls Softball Organization (OGSO). Our season typically consists of 16 league games, 8 home games at Greenwood Park and 8 away games played at various locations throughout Medina and Lorain counties. The season concludes with the OGSO district tournament and a possible berth to the State tournament held in late July.

The Medina Girls Softball Association’s Travel Team tryouts for the 2008 season will be conducted at Greenwood Park on Saturday-August 18, 2007 and Saturday-August 25, 2007 in accordance with the following schedule:

		Birthdate falls between:
9 & 10 year olds	10 AM – 12 PM	8/1/97 – 7/31/99
11 & 12 year olds	12:30 PM – 2:30 PM	8/1/95 – 7/31/97
13 & 14 year olds	3 PM – 5 PM	8/1/93 – 7/31/95

All players wishing to tryout must be present 30 minutes before your assigned time to fill out the necessary tryout application forms. The form is available on our Registration Page.

There will be a Travel Team for ages 15 -18 year olds in 2008, however these tryouts will be conducted in the spring of 2008.

The tournament format will be a seeded, double elimination tournament. The games will start on Saturday July 21, 2007. Championship games will be played on Sunday July 29, prior to the League picnic.

MGSA is providing Hot Dogs and Pizza.
Water may be brought earlier in the week, and dropped off at the concession stand.
Food should be given to the crew running the food tent.

UMPIRES VS. COACHES GAME starting at 4:00.
All umpires, blue or gray will be playing against coaches and parents. Bring your own teams, or walk ons welcome. This will be a slow pitch game, 7 innings, no time limit. Have fun – no injuries!

All Star Game

All Star Games will be held at Greenwood Park, tomorrow night July 11, at 6:30. All participants (player/coaches) are encouraged to plan on being there at least 45 minutes-1 hour before game time.

All Star Games

All Star Games will be held July 11 this year. In the past, many All-Stars could not participate as their families tried to squeeze in vacations between the end of our season and the start of school. So we have moved up the date in hopes that more of our All Stars will be on the field for this event. Coaches need to get their selections in ASAP.

Conduct Reminder

PLEASE remember that if you, or a parent on your team get tossed out of a game for arguing with an umpire, your daughter goes with you. We received a report of a 14 or 15 year old girl umpire, leaving the field in tears, due to the complaining and criticism from the coaches/parents. We ALL need to remember, that the girl/boy behind the plate is someone else's daughter/son. Take a step back, and before you get on them, think about how you would want another ADULT to talk to YOUR child.

From our rules:

No yelling at umpires and officials. Request time out and meet at home plate for a civilized discussion. If a manager or assistant consistently disputes calls or harasses the umpires, the umpires should bring the issue to the attention of the Board.

Any manager, coach, or team assistant being ejected from a game, will be suspended for the following game.

Ejections and/or suspensions will affect both the coach and his or her daughter.

Rally in the Alley Volunteers Needed for June 29th

Game Face Protective Mask

Parents/Coaches,

PLEASE take the time to take a serious look into purchasing, and start promoting the use of this piece of protective equipment for your daughters. Pitchers should never step onto the rubber without one. In my opinion, 1st and 3rd basemen should wear one also. This organization has been lucky so far, that none of the girls have gotten seriously hurt by a line drive to the head, or a by a bad bounce hitting them in the mouth. Check out the Game Face website to make it easier for you to research this piece of equipment. The best place I have found to purchase one is at Sportsnmore.com. They are $29.95+ shipping.

LEAGUE RAIN / LIGHTNING POLICY

During the 2005 Season the MGSA purchased a small lightning detector to help us protect our players and families from the rapidly changing weather conditions we “enjoy” here in Medina. This purchase caused a considerable amount of confusion and concern among some of our parents. The lightning detector is a tool to supplement the eyes and ears of the umpires and league officials that monitor the weather during games. It can tell us the approximate distance of lightning strikes from the ball field, and whether the weather is moving toward us or away from us. It cannot predict imminent lightning strikes nearby. It is not a substitute for common sense and the good judgement of all the adults at the ball field. The MGSA will try to play as many games as possible, but will suspend or cancel games whenever we feel player safety is compromised. If for any reason you disagree with the judgement of a league official, umpire or coach regarding weather conditions, you have the right and responsibility to remove your child from the field of play without penalty to your child or her team.

WHAT IS THE MGSA?

At the end of the 2006 softball season we had almost 500 girls playing organized fastpitch softball in Medina. They were divided, based on age, within four separate Recreational Divisions and 3 Travel Divisions. These girls and their parents, who number over 1,200, make up the membership of MGSA. The MGSA provides a complete program for girls, from those entering Kindergarten to 18 year olds heading off to college. Our Recreation and Travel Leagues provide fun and challenge for girls looking for a fun and healthy summer activity, and for aspiring athletes looking for challenging competition and advanced instruction.

Recreational League Uniforms

Coaches,

Your team uniforms, along with coach/player informational packets will be available for pickup starting on Wednesday morning May 23, 2007 at Sportsworld. Sportsworld is located at 108 Washington Street, between Hershey's Barber Shop and Medina Sports Card Shop. Their hours are: M, T, Th, F. 9:00-5:30, W. 9:00-5:00, and Saturday 10:00-3:00.

You will receive information regarding your team pictures along with your uniforms. Also, when you have your team picture taken, which will be on Opening Day, you will be given a Sponsor Thank You card that your team will need to sign, so that we can send them out, along with a team schedule to the many Medina area business' that are helping to support the MGSA. If any of you are going to be making up an individual team schedule, please bring me a copy on Opening Day, so we can include it with the thank you to your team sponsor.

Please remember that when you visit the place of business of any of our sponsors, to take a minute, and thank them for their support of our organization. We have a record number of sponsors this year, and these business owners have made a choice to support our organization, and we need to show our appreciation to them, whenever the opportunity presents itself.
